Is this the reel life or is this just fantasy?

Sian 1/2

Its funny how I have changed from dreading the day the ad will air, to wanting the ad to air as soon as possible. I think the main reason for the change in attitude is that I got really sick of anticipating the airing of the damn TVC for so long (almost 9 months wtf?!).

If its cancelled/postponed indefinitely, please let me know, cuz then at least I can tell peeps whom I have told before to look out for it to stop looking out. I can also stop putting it as a reference whenever I go for auditions. It will also bring some peace to mind and a close to the chapter as well.

Whatever it is, I just want to know. I think I deserve an answer after so long. KNN.

First Audition Of The Year!

Posted by Ruok On February - 23 - 2006

Yesterday, I went for my first audition for Oh Sex. Woot! On another note, seeing how it took until February for my first audition, does say something about my career. *sigh* Anyway, back to happy thoughts!

I received a call the week before and was surprised to hear an unfamiliar production house asking me to go to the audition. When I arrived there, I realised it was a casting director whom I previously auditioned for (but failed to clinch the role) who called me. She had still remembered me from the last time round ( *ahem* must have given her a good impression :P) so had invited me down for a whopping three roles to audition for this time round. Woohoo!

The roles were for a station manager, an autistic man and an ah beng. Although the ah beng role had more screen time, I agreed to audition for the other roles as well, as its not like me to pass up on an opportunity to act. I think she was suitably impressed with what I could offer her for all the three roles, but I’m really hoping to land the ah beng one hehehe. Why? Because I think his scenes are funnny lor, and damn, I really missed doing comedy.

Even though the time in which I get to act was very short, I felt very invigorated after the audition. I think I have mentioned this before, that even though the duration is short, auditions are a very much welcomed shot in the arm for me. And this audition, coming after such a long dry season, does wonders to my parched soul.

When I found out that the casting director was freelance as well, I decided to show her my showreel. When it came to the “True Courage” scene, she was wincing (no surprises) at my character’s actions and I wondered if she too would feel that I’m more suitable for villian roles. To my surprise, she only said that I was very versatile, hehehe. *beam*

I think that really made my day. I’ve got another audition this Saturday, and its a gangster role. Wish me luck!

4 Closure Part Deux

Posted by Ruok On February - 18 - 2006

“Vince, this is Liz! Call me back, its urgent!!” goes an excited Liz on my voicemail.

“I have just been told we won the Special Mention Prize at the Fest! So can you make it to the awards tonight?”
WTF?!!! Of course can lah!

Some two hours later, after I discarded my “Clark Kent” disguise, I rushed down to Substation to meet Liz. Dave, too had excitedly called me all the way from Oz, and told me that we were in the running for the Voice Award (Audience Choice) as well. “Man,” he exclaimed, “We were supposed to close the chapter on this one already.”
“Well,” I told him, “looks like we are closing it with a happy ending, hehehe.”

They explained to me what the award meant. The Fest had two best short film awards, one was the best overall short (Special Jury Prize) and the other one was the best overall local short (Special Mention Prize). That meant that our entry was the deemed the best S’porean short in the Fest! Wahahaha!

They also shortlist 6 shorts (from a total of 34) for audience choice, and we were the only S’porean entry! Wahahaha!

4 Closure

Posted by Ruok On February - 16 - 2006

After we attended the screening, Dave bought the rest of us some drinks. We talked about the audience reaction to the redux version agreed that the important thing was not whether this was the best version or not, but that this version was one where more people got what we were trying to say. As we raised our glasses together, he told me that its time to close the chapter liow and as a result, he would not be submitting it for the Portugal film festival.

In a way, I understood his need to move on. This was after all his first short and I think we have stayed on this joyride long enough. We did not talk about our expectation of winning something from the festival, but its not because we didn’t think we will win or that we are good enough to win. The way I look at it, I think we are just jaded… it is after all the third film festival that its been in.

We stayed on till the band finished its last song, “Sexual Healing”. Makes you wonder how you got hurt in the first place eh? 😉

情为何物

Posted by Ruok On February - 14 - 2006

A while ago, I was asked what is love, and how do you define love. While I’m no love guru, one thing I know for sure is that making lots of merchants happy on one particular day does not define love. But then some will say its romantic … yet I fail to see how following the crowd and doing what everyone is doing can be deemed “romantic”. But lest you find me a cynic to love and romance this year, let me share this beautiful poem :

I don’t love you as if you were the salt-rose, topaz
or arrow of carnations that propagate fire:
I love you as certain dark things are loved,
secretly, between the shadow and the soul.

I love you as the plant that doesn’t bloom and carries
hidden within itself the light of those flowers,
and thanks to your love, darkly in my body
lives the dense fragrance that rises from the earth.

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where,
I love you simply, without problems or pride:
I love you in this way because I don’t know any other way of loving

but this, in which there is no I or you,
so intimate that your hand upon my chest is my hand,
so intimate that when I fall asleep it is your eyes that close.

Pablo Neruda, Sonnet XVII

So whether you have lined the pockets of merchants this day or not, I wish all my readers, a Happy Kenna Fleeced Valentine’s Day!

Showreel

Posted by Ruok On February - 10 - 2006

I have just done up a new showreel, you guys can go watch it here.

Its slightly longer than the old one, and I took out some of the more “offending” footage… heh. Some of my friends have also told me to put my classic “this is what I do to girls who reject me” scene right at the back, so that I don’t keep getting stereotyped to play bad guys.

But by doing so, I feel it breaks the pace of the reel. So this Quentin Taratino wanna be have decided, to hell with my image, a good show is more important. However, I did push it back to the second clip though so hopefully that helps. 😛

Overkill

Yes, I do think its overkill, but errm “4444” is in another film festival.

Ok, make that potentially two film festivals. Dave have re-edited the short and have submitted it to the coming S’pore Short Film Festival as well as a Portuguese one. At this point, I have been told that its in the S’pore one (Thanks Liz! And Dave did mention it before, but he couldn’t confirm the screening date then) though I don’t have any update on the Portuguese one yet.

I know most of you have watched the earlier version already, so I don’t reckon you will be interested to catch it again, even though its gonna be on a BIGGER screen and it has SUBTITLES now. Heh. But I will be there, so if some of you do make it down, please come over and say hi hor!

Oh, and I just received an sms informing me that another short I did may be screening on TV Mobile as well. Liew, if it really screens, I think I’ll need my disguise sooner rather than later… 😛

“Mummy, he looks familiar”

Posted by Ruok On February - 3 - 2006

On my way to Wala on Thursday night, an ex-colleague recognised me from the car I was in. Since she was also in the vicinity, we arranged to meet for a short while, being the loony nude year and all.

It turms out that she was having dessert with her sister’s family and as they came out to greet me, her niece told her mum that she found me familiar, to which the mum remarked “You saw him on tv ah?”, causing the little girl to nod and run behind her mother’s back (why does this scene looks so familiar?).

Dang it. And I didn’t even got a chance to ask her which show she caught me in. -_-‘
